4 Things to Think About When Planning a New Zealand Holiday

From understanding interests to navigating budgets and must-see destinations, here’s how to tailor the ultimate Kiwi adventure for your clients.

When it comes to planning the ultimate New Zealand holiday for your clients, no one gets more excited than our reservations team. But there are a few basics they need to know to make sure they hit the mark, first time, every time.

Interests

Before you shoot for dates, shoot the breeze! There is something to see and do for everyone in New Zealand, and knowing what your clients are into and how they like to spend their time can help take their holiday to the next level. Do they golf? Then maybe add in a luxury stay at the Kauri Cliffs Lodge and a half day’s golf at the world-class Kauri Golf Course. If they are into food and wine there are a plethora of tours to choose from: a full day Napier Wine Tour or a Waiheke Island Wine Tour. Nature lovers will be blown away from the wildlife in the Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island.

Budget

Talking about money can be uncomfortable, but it is a necessary evil, particularly when planning the perfect New Zealand holiday. You might be amazed at the number of Travel Agents we speak to who don’t know what the budget is for the client’s holiday. It can mean we put together an itinerary that frightens them off when it comes to the final price. Knowing roughly what they are prepared to spend will help plan items like the accommodation type and number of activities included. There is no point in including a once-in-a-lifetime scenic helicopter flight on a shoestring budget. The good news is you may not need to just come out and ask for it. We have heard of some Travel Agents getting an idea of budget by asking questions about accommodation style preferred instead. Or suggesting price brackets – for example: “If I put together a holiday for roughly $2,500 per person, would that be in your budget?”.

Length of Holiday

The time the client can afford to be on holidays for is the biggest determinate of the itinerary. If the client only has 7 days available, then we suggest sticking to the North Island only. For 10 days to 2 weeks, then we recommend the South Island. And if they have a luxurious 3 weeks to spend abroad then this will be enough for both islands.

What Are the Must-Sees?

For Lord of the Rings fans, Hobbiton on the North Island will be a non-negotiable. For lovers of the great outdoors it could be Milford Sound, at the base of the South Island. Often just one of these must-sees will dictate the itinerary for the holiday and which island their New Zealand adventure will be based on. It’s a great starting point question to help plan the holiday.
